Only a few months after the Civil War ended, in an August 1865 issue of Harper’s Weekly, Thomas Nast contrasted the petitions for pardons by ex-Confederate politicians and military officers, including Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee, with the voting rights for a disabled African American veteran.
